Storage for Washington, West Sussex — No Unit in the Village, But We’re Four Minutes Up the Road

There’s no storage unit anywhere in Washington, West Sussex itself — search RH20 and the nearest genuine self-storage facility turns out to be in Pulborough, the best part of eight miles up the A283, with the next nearest all the way over at East Preston, fourteen-plus miles south. Wolves works differently, and closer: our base sits at Ashington, just 2-3 miles up the A24 from the Washington roundabout — about four minutes’ drive, and the same RH20 postcode district — which makes ours the shortest run any storage provider covering the village can offer.

None of that four-minute run leaves you holding anything: on the day you book, the crew comes down from Ashington to your door, builds your own wooden container on the spot, and has it packed and sealed before they leave — no rented van, no lifting, nothing you drive anywhere yourself. From there it heads home to Ashington under alarm and camera cover, resting inside the same RH20 boundary it was collected from. The stage-by-stage version is on how it works; the full figures, including the £21-a-week rate and the absence of any deposit, are on pricing.

Storage Services in Washington

Ashington is just 2-3 miles up the A24 from the Washington roundabout, and that closeness is the whole point: a fully managed, fully insured crew builds and seals your own wooden container on the doorstep, stores it at our alarmed Ashington warehouse, and charges £21 a week for storage, with collection quoted separately upfront.

Beneath Chanctonbury Ring, Beside the A24

Washington sits directly at the foot of the South Downs escarpment, where the A24 (Worthing to Horsham) and the A283 cross at what’s still known locally as the Washington roundabout. Look up from almost anywhere here and the skyline is Chanctonbury Hill, capped by Chanctonbury Ring: an Iron Age hillfort on the Washington/Wiston parish border, ringed by beech trees a local teenager, Charles Goring, planted in 1760 and reportedly kept alive by carrying water up the hill himself. The Great Storm of 1987 flattened more than three-quarters of those beeches in a single night; the replanted ring, and the South Downs Way running past it along an ancient ridge route, both look down over the village and the Weald beyond. The hamlet of Rock sits just north of the A283 within the parish, and the composer John Ireland spent his final years, and died, in a converted windmill in the village.

Just 1,867 people were counted here at the 2011 census, living mostly in period cottages and farmhouses built long before lofts or fitted cupboards were part of the plan — which is exactly why the shed, the garage or the outbuilding out the back so often ends up doing a spare room’s job, packed tighter than the house it sits behind. What that setting produces, again and again, is the same handful of jobs: a downsize out of one of those homes, a farmhouse cleared ahead of a sale, a gap opening up mid-chain, or a room stripped bare for a renovation. None of them are the kind of thing a village this size, this rural, was ever built to store.

Managed Storage vs a Self-Storage Unit in Washington

There’s no self-storage facility inside Washington itself — the nearest, in Pulborough, is the best part of eight miles up the A283, with the next option after that over fourteen miles away at East Preston. Either one means a genuine round trip out of the village and back, twice over, to load and then collect. Wolves removes that journey entirely: our crew meets you at the door in RH20, builds and seals your own wooden container on the spot, then carries it the 2-3 miles to Ashington — a self-storage unit is something you’d have to drive to; a Wolves container is something that comes to you.

Wolves — managed storageA self-storage unit
Where the storage actually is2-3 miles covers it — Ashington, just up the A24 from the Washington roundabout, is the closest storage point of any kind to the village.Pulborough is the closest self-storage site going, and that’s still the best part of eight miles up the A283 before you’re even there.
Who drives & liftsPoint out what’s staying and what’s going, and the crew takes it from there — every box, every lift, done for you.Every lift, every mile behind the wheel, is down to you — the unit doesn’t come to the house.
Packing & wrappingThe crew wraps your furniture in protective blankets and loads it for you, sealing your container shut before it leaves the doorstep — you do the boxing, or we do it for you as a paid option.Materials aren’t provided — you source them, then pack the whole lot yourself before the unit’s even unlocked.
Getting your things backOne phone call, 24 hours’ notice, and the sealed container is back on your doorstep — no journey required on your end.It means a round trip out to Pulborough or beyond — once to load the van, once again to drive it home.
DepositNothing held back on any Wolves quote — booking through to redelivery, the figure never changes.A deposit is standard practice before a key changes hands at most self-storage sites.
Insurance while movingThe first box lifted at your door is already covered — there’s no point in the process where it isn’t.Cover on most unit policies only starts once everything’s already inside — the drive there is on you.
What you pay£21 covers the container, its storage and insurance — collection and the return are quoted upfront as a separate figure, with packing your things into boxes an optional add-on, agreed before anything is booked. The weekly rent is just the headline number; van hire, fuel and the trip up the A283 and back still get added on top.
Size & price guide

What Size Storage Do You Need in Washington?

There’s nothing to measure in advance — every container is a fixed 250 cu ft, and most Washington homes need somewhere between one and four of them. Use the table below as a starting point; the crew confirms the exact count once they’re actually packing on the day.

Your homeContainers you’ll needFrom
A studio or a few roomsusually one container, sometimes part-filledfrom £21/week
A one-bedroom flatone containerfrom £21/week
A two-bedroom homeabout two containersfrom £42/week
A three-bedroom homeabout three containersfrom £63/week
A larger house or one with outbuildingsfour or more containersfrom £79/week

A cottage near the church or the roundabout rarely needs more than a container or two; a farmhouse clearance with a barn or outbuilding attached usually runs to four or more — either way, the price only ever reflects what’s actually packed and driven away. Table prices cover storage and insurance; collection & redelivery are quoted separately, upfront.

Why our neighbours choose us

The Wolves Storage Difference in Washington

Local, managed and genuinely cared for — why local homes and businesses choose us.

Fully Insured & Alarmed

One policy runs the whole journey: live the second the crew lifts your first box off the Washington doorstep, unbroken while the container spends its time behind Ashington’s alarms and cameras, and still the exact cover standing behind everything on the day it’s handed back.

Local, Family-Run Since 2016

The same crew that’s worked this stretch of the A24, from Ashington down through Washington to Storrington, since 2016 turns up for every job — LAPADA-accredited, Checkatrade-verified, never a subcontracted van.

From £21/Week Storage, No Deposit

£21 covers one container, insurance included, with nothing to find upfront — useful when a chain slips a week or two, since anything not yet booked in never shows up on the bill.

We Come to You

The nearest genuine storage unit to Washington is a proper drive away; our warehouse isn’t. Ashington sits 2-3 miles up the A24, about four minutes, inside the same RH20 postcode district — the shortest reach of any provider covering the village. That’s the whole reason collection happens on your doorstep, not at a unit you’d have to find your own way to.

Every Service, Mapped to a Washington, West Sussex Move

A downsize below Chanctonbury needs long-term storage for as long as it genuinely takes; a chain gap between two completions is exactly what short-term storage is built for; a sofa or wardrobe that’s outgrown the new place for now goes into furniture storage; and a trader or home business working out of the village uses business storage for stock, tools or paperwork. Every option runs through the same wooden container storage at the same £21-a-week rate.

The same crew that collects from Washington, West Sussex covers Ashington immediately to the north, Storrington three miles west, and the hamlets of Rock and Wiston within the parish itself — see the full reach on areas we cover, or work out how many containers a move like yours needs on the size guide.

Washington, West Sussex: A Village Beneath Chanctonbury Ring

Washington is a small village, home to fewer than two thousand people, tucked in exactly where the A24 meets the A283 at the Washington roundabout — five miles west of Steyning, three miles east of Storrington, and directly under the escarpment where the Downs rise toward Chanctonbury. St Mary’s Church and the Frankland Arms sit close to the village centre, and the lanes running off the main road stay narrow and largely unchanged, whatever traffic passes along the A24 itself.

North of the A283, within the same parish, the hamlet of Rock keeps its own scatter of houses and farmland, while Wiston — sharing the parish border that Chanctonbury Ring itself sits on — and Buncton lie just to the west, each barely more than a handful of buildings among the fields. It’s the kind of setting where a shed, a barn or a garage often holds as much as the house does, and where a full clearance rarely fits neatly into a single skip or a single car boot.

Collection here works the same way whichever lane the address is down: the crew drives the 2-3 miles down from Ashington — about four minutes, still inside RH20 — loads and seals your own container at the door, and has it back at the warehouse before a round trip would even have started from anywhere further out. Nothing about Washington’s position beside the Downs makes a self-storage run any easier; being this close is what makes a managed, door-to-door service actually work.

We had a big move with everything going into a mix of long term and short term storage. Jack was very responsive and helpful answering my many questions as we got ready for the move, and the four guys on moving day were super efficient and friendly. They have their own storage facility too, which is reassuring and just makes everything more straightforward.

What Washington Stores With Us

A downsize below Chanctonbury, a barn or outbuilding cleared, a chain gap between completions, heirlooms that need real care — whatever a Washington home hands over, one insured container at £21 a week takes it, collected from the door and stored 2-3 miles up the A24, with that short collection quoted separately.

Downsizing From a Period Home Below the Downs

Trading a farmhouse or cottage at the foot of Chanctonbury for something smaller rarely means the contents shrink to match — anything that won’t cross the new threshold is collected and stored until there’s a plan for it.

When Two Completion Dates Won’t Line Up

Completion dates rarely land on the same day — when the old address finishes before the new one’s ready, the container simply holds everything in between, for as long as the gap runs, so nothing gets squeezed into a short-term let or a spare room that isn’t really spare.

Clearing a Farm Outbuilding or Barn

A barn, byre or outbuilding often holds as much as the house itself — we clear it alongside the rooms and keep the lot together in one container, rather than splitting it across a skip and a van.

Antiques & Heirlooms From a Village Home

A piece that’s been in the same Washington farmhouse for two or three generations gets handled to LAPADA-accredited standard, not bundled in with a general clearance — wrapped, padded and logged like the heirloom it is.

We Cover Washington

Being 2-3 miles away is the whole point here: our Ashington base sits just up the A24 from the Washington roundabout, about four minutes’ drive, inside the same RH20 as the village itself. Hand over a postcode and the crew does the rest — collecting at the door, sealing the container where it stands, and driving it back to store; you never take your things anywhere yourself.

Areas & Postcodes We Cover Around Washington

Washington and its RH20 neighbours — the village itself, the hamlet of Rock north of the A283, Wiston and Buncton out among the fields, and Ashington and Storrington on either side — all sit on the same short round, and none has a Wolves unit to drive to. Give the crew a postcode and everything follows from it: the loading, the container built at the door, the 2-3 mile run up the A24 to store, and the drive back whenever you ask.

Storage, answered

Washington Storage: Your Questions Answered

The questions West Sussex customers ask us most.

The crew turns up at your Washington door on the day you’ve booked, then builds and packs your own wooden container right there on the step — nothing carried to a van, nothing driven by you. Once it’s sealed, it’s driven off to Ashington, where it’s kept alarmed and insured until the day you want it back.

£21 a week per container, no deposit, no hidden fees. Collection and eventual redelivery — plus packing, if you’d like our crew to do it — are priced apart from that figure, confirmed with you ahead of the job — a free quote is normally confirmed within 24 hours.

Yes — Ashington, Storrington, Rock and Wiston all sit on the same short collection round, and every one gets the same managed service — storage at £21 a week, with collection and redelivery quoted upfront.

No — there’s no self-storage facility inside the village. The nearest is in Pulborough, around eight miles up the A283, with the next option after that over fourteen miles away at East Preston. Wolves is closer than either: our Ashington base is just 2-3 miles from the Washington roundabout, and we come to your door rather than asking you to drive to a unit.

It’s your own wooden container, around 250 cu ft, built and sealed at your front door — not a steel box on a rented site, and not somewhere you drive to and unlock yourself. From the moment it’s sealed, it sits inside our alarmed Ashington warehouse until you call for it back.

Both — cover begins the second the crew picks up the first item at your door, and it doesn’t lapse at any point between there and the container coming back.

A day’s notice is all it takes — 24 hours, and your sealed container is back at the door, in Washington or any of the surrounding villages the crew already covers.

Closer than any other provider — our Ashington warehouse sits just 2-3 miles from the Washington roundabout, about four minutes by road, inside the same RH20 district your address is in. The village itself has nowhere to store things locally, but with a run that short, the distance is our problem to solve, not yours.
